A Back Yard Made AccessibleLoading...
There are staircases and then there are staircases. The owners of this Newton home were faced with a challenge: their Victorian house was perched high onto of a hill with an expansive yard the adults wanted to use for gardening and the children wanted to play in, but neither could get to. We were asked to create a staircase down the steeply-sloped garden onto the backyard...no easy task. We used two types of FSC-certified wood, Garapa and Maya mahogany, to create a contrast between the deck and the stair railing. We built three separate decks at several levels with benches, so the homeowners could store gardening tools, the children could store outdoor toys, and everyone could have comfortable stopping-places during the descent to the yard. The end result is a dramatic staircase that brings the back yard right back to the house, where it belongs. |
