A renovation can be as much about creating new outdoor space as indoor space. Sometimes the relationship between the two surprises homeowners.

For this family we turned a smallish kitchen, an adjacent full bathroom, and a small storage room into a bright and spacious kitchen with an appealing breakfast area and a new powder room nearby. We converted the old garage into a sunny and comfortable family room, and built a new two-car garage with attic storage, connected to the house by a graceful covered colonnade. Though concerned that the new garage would deprive them of a sizeable portion of the side yard, the family found instead that it created inviting private space in the back yard, which we landscaped as a lovely paved terrace for grilling and dining.
