An open floor plan works best for this family of five. The owners of this suburban cape wanted a kitchen area that would work well for efficient preparation of quick meals for the kids as well as for leisurely Sunday breakfasts with the family. Several additions to the original ranch had made this a roomy home — but the kitchen area still occupied its original cramped space. It was the homeowners' hope that they could accomplish a kitchen renovation without another addition and that they could make use of a picturesque, but underutilized, screen porch that had been built during a previous project. In the end, the new kitchen was relocated to share the spacious family room area, which was large enough to serve as both a well-functioning kitchen and a family gathering spot. Adjacent to the new kitchen is the former screen porch, now a light-filled cathedral-ceilinged breakfast room that captures the views of the yard. A new home office, butler's pantry, kitchen pantry and powder room now occupy the space where the kitchen had once been. Granite countertops, stainless steel appliances (some camouflaged by cabinetry), and an island eating area with views of the lovely landscaping all create an integrated space that can serve disparate purposes. Attention to detail shows up most prominently in the arched entrance leading into the breakfast room. The newly outfitted family room brings warmth with its fireplace and custom bookcases and doubles as a media center. With the open floor plan this family of five can enjoy each other's company no matter where they are in the space or what they're doing. |
