No matter how creative you are with your existing space, sometimes there's no recourse except to add on. This can be particularly true with late Victorians, which often have lovely well-proportioned formal rooms but lack less structured multi-purpose spaces for growing families.

The challenge is to add these less formal spaces onto a house and still have smooth flow and respectful continuity. On this project, we were able to avoid the "box on the back" look through careful scaling and judicious matching of exterior and interior finishes and architectural details. New work that tries to look old can come across as a weak caricature; the trick is to match the texture and atmosphere of the old house while remaining honest that it is a 21st-century addition. We seem to have succeeded.
