Historic Victorian: Old Meets New

The house was built in 1883, designed by prominent Boston-based architects Peabody and Stearns; it had been only minimally modified over the intervening decades.

The homeowners wanted to upgrade their Spartan kitchen without compromising the mid-Victorian character of the house. Measures were taken to maintain the traditional aspects of this house included restoring the original wood flooring; installing inset door cabinetry glazed with restoration glass; and reproducing the original head-height tile wainscoting. The cabinetry was designed to be consistent in quality and appearance with the original kitchen cabinetry in the home. These renovations have been complemented by contemporary stone and stainless steel countertops, pantry pullouts, and professional appliances camouflaged with traditional cabinet panels.

The end result is a kitchen that meets the needs of this family on a daily basis, can easily handle large-scale entertaining, and, most importantly, fits comfortably into the long, distinguished history of the home.
