Energy Efficiency

"Green construction" is a current catch phrase with as many definitions as practitioners. For many, the trappings are what's important: bamboo flooring, composite decking, recycled glass tiles. Although we understand there's a need and a place for these products, we believe any truly "green" building approach needs to start with energy efficiency. Part of that efficiency comes from minimizing maintenance costs (see Building Science) and part comes from minimizing operating costs — heating, cooling, and lighting loads. We understand the need for both insulation and air-sealing in order to minimize the heating and cooling loads. We test our projects with our own blower door and infrared camera at several points during the construction process to make sure we've dealt with any unexpected thermal bypasses. We realize that good air-sealing, contrary to popular opinion, is the best way to maintain control over indoor air quality — not a prescription for mold and mildew. With regard to lighting loads, we know where to find the best and latest compact fluorescent light bulbs, including dimmable floods for your recessed lights. Our expectation is that once we're done with your project — whatever that project is — we will have noticeably lightened your home's load on the planet. Futhermore, we can quantify those improvements by use of HERS scores. Learn more about HERS scores...
