We had seen the quality of their work at a friend's house, and we were impressed with the hidden details. Once we got to know them, we were impressed with them as a team that takes enormous pride in their work.
They really have made a study of the best way to do things. This is not a job they have because it is all they know — there are Harvard and MIT graduates among them — but it's really a way of life.
Our projects weren't glamorous. Byggmeister reconstructed a deck appropriate to the period of the house, renovated a bedroom and bathroom, replaced a living room wall. They replaced some poorly done, awkward additions to the house.
They offered so much more than just their carpentry skills. Our architect had planned on flat moldings around some new windows, but Paul and his crew were bothered that they wouldn't fit well with the ornate moldings in the rest of the house. We felt that custom moldings would be too expensive. But they found a very clever way to combine stock moldings for the perfect effect, and now the windows are really integrated with the rest of the house. That sort of detail is a real source of satisfaction now.
Their work is exquisite, and their strong service ethic is an extension of their personalities and integrity. We knew we could trust them completely.
Homeowners probably always have some pet item that turns into a thorny project. We had some stained-glass doors that wouldn't work as front doors. So we decided to use them decoratively, and hang them in front of our sliding glass doors. It was very tricky work — they mounted them on a custom frame, hung them on a sliding track, and somehow pulled it off. They look great.
They're very easy to work with, it's a low-maintenance, low-stress relationship. If we were sitting glassy-eyed at the breakfast table, they would smile and almost tiptoe past, trying so hard not to intrude.
They are nice, interesting, really fine people. Their work is exquisite, and their strong service ethic is an extension of their personalities and integrity. We knew we could trust them completely.
Beyond that, we ended up as friends, which was so lovely and so unexpected.

"Little things make a difference: I washed the windows at one house at the end of the day because I knew they were having guests for Thanksgiving the next day. When you walk away, it looks as nice as a construction project can look, and you know they'll appreciate it." - Lead carpenter
"We're not perfect. In this business, we have to make endless judgment calls, and some will inevitably be wrong. The client tells us, and we fix it. With good communication, it's really that simple." - Owner, Paul Eldrenkamp
