FAQs

What does a design-build firm do?

A design-build firm manages both the design and construction phases of a renovation project. Instead of hiring separate two firms – one to design and another to build your project – you would work with a single firm who would oversee your entire project from the initial design all the way through post-construction follow-up.

This approach allows for:

  • Better collaboration between designers and builders
  • More predictable budgets with fewer change orders
  • More predictable schedules with fewer delays
  • A smoother overall renovation experience

What types of renovation projects does Byggmeister specialize in?

Byggmeister focuses primarily on renovations of older homes that improve both livability and sustainability.

Common projects include:

  • Whole-home renovations
  • Kitchen remodels
  • Bathroom remodels
  • Attic or basement conversions
  • Energy-efficiency upgrades
  • Home additions and reconfigurations

You can explore examples of our work in the Projects Portfolio.

Why choose a design-build firm instead of hiring separate professionals?

When design and construction are separated, communication gaps can lead to unexpected costs or delays.

With a design-build team like Byggmeister:

  • Designers and builders collaborate from day one
  • Budgets are developed alongside the design
  • Construction feasibility is considered early
  • Decisions are streamlined

This integrated process reduces surprises and improves project outcomes.

More about our philosophy can be found on the About Byggmeister page.

Do you specialize in historic or older homes?

Yes. Renovating older homes is a core part of our expertise.

Older homes often require careful planning to preserve architectural character while improving performance and comfort. Our team regularly works with homes that require:

  • Structural repairs
  • Energy retrofits
  • Roofing, windows, siding and systems replacements
  • Layout reconfiguration
  • Careful preservation of original features

You can see how we approach these projects in our video playlist called Efficient, Elegant & All-Electric.

How does the Byggmeister renovation process work?

Renovating your home is one of the most significant investments you'll make — and it should feel that way in the best possible sense. Our design-build process is structured to minimize surprises and maximize collaboration, so you always know where things stand, what's coming next, and that your project is in capable hands.

Typical phases include:

  1. Initial Consultation: We discuss your goals, home, and renovation ideas and determine whether Byggmeister is the best fit for your project..
  2. Planning & Design: We establish project goals, develop design concepts, refine details, and create a realistic project budget and schedule.
  3. Construction: Our team manages the entire build with regular communication and project oversight.
  4. Completion & Follow-up: We ensure the finished project meets expectations and stands the test of time.

More details about this approach are available on our Our Services page.

How long does a typical renovation take?

We know timelines are important when planning a renovation. The truth is, the length of a project depends on its scope. We have a great track record of delivering projects on time because we know how long different types of projects typically take and we set realistic schedules up front that allow us to deliver top quality in a timely way. From smaller projects to larger transformation, some typical timelines include:

  • Bathroom Renovation: A full gut renovation usually takes at least 3 months.
  • Kitchen Renovations: A full gut renovation typically takes about 4 months to complete.
  • Basements: Insulation and air sealing can take around 4-6 weeks, while finishing out a basement may take 2-3 months.
  • Finished Attics: Without a dormer, finishing an attic might take 3-4 months. If a dormer is added, the timeline could extend to 5 months.

A detailed timeline is developed during the design phase so expectations are clear.

How much does a renovation project cost?

Renovation costs vary widely depending on:

  • Your goals
  • Your home’s condition
  • Overall project scope
  • Material and subcontractor costs

And while we can’t tell you exactly what your project will cost upfront, we can give you a sense of the potential cost range. We can also discuss cost drivers, areas of uncertainty and strategies for managing cost.

This initial budget conversation is the first of many. During the design phase, we provide budget check-ins at key milestones to help you make informed decisions about design and scope. With each subsequent budget check-in the cost range becomes narrower and more accurate until we arrive at a fixed price for construction.

Can I live in my home during renovations?

The only time moving out is necessary is when the project scope includes renovating every bathroom. Otherwise, the decision to stay home or move out is a personal one.

When clients decide to move out, it’s usually because we’re working on multiple areas of their home. In general, the larger the project scope, the more it makes sense to consider relocating temporarily.

If you choose to stay in your home during the project, we do everything we can to minimize disruption to your daily routine. And whether or not you live in your home during construction, we take care of it as we would our own homes.

Do you incorporate sustainability and energy efficiency?

Yes. Sustainability is a central part of the Byggmeister philosophy.

Many renovation projects include:

  • Improved insulation and air sealing to improve comfort and efficiency
  • High-efficiency, all-electric systems to eliminate on-site fossil fuel usage
  • Balanced ventilation to improve indoor air quality
  • Low-embodied carbon and healthy materials

How do I get started with a renovation project?

The first step is to fill out the initial inquiry form on our contact page. Someone will follow up with you within one business day inviting you to self-schedule a time for an initial phone consultation.

What should I do if an issue comes up after my renovation is complete?

We will proactively check-in with you 6, 12 and 24 months after your project is complete to see if any adjustments or touch-ups are needed. If something comes up between these check-ins, please keep a list for us to address at our next check-in – unless, of course, it’s urgent. Then we ask you to get in touch right away. We also gather energy use data to quantify the impact of our work on your home’s energy use and carbon emissions. In short – we stay involved to make sure your home continues to function, feel comfortable, and perform as intended long after we've pounded in the final nail and applied the last coat of paint.
